cell troubleshooting, and in addition to quantity and storage
factors, incorrect operation and improper maintenance are among the
most important causes. If troubleshooting is detected, it is
essential to analyze the reasons in a timely manner and take
effective measures to eliminate the problem. The features of common
troubleshooting, along with their causes and checking and repairing
methods, are as follows:
1. Internal Short-Circuit
1.1 Symptoms: The charge voltage is consistently lower than normal; the
discharge capacity is reduced compared to the usual level; the
discharge voltage drops quickly to the final voltage; during
charging, the voltage and specific gravity rise slowly, with little
or no gassing at the end of the charge; the temperature of the
electrolyte is high and increases rapidly during charging; and
there is serious self-discharge.
1.2 Probable Causes: Internal short-circuit can occur due to several factors, such as
conducting materials entering the cells and connecting the positive
and negative plates; damage to the separator; the formation of lead
bulbs on the plates, which accumulate at the plate ears and cause a
short-circuit; and the expansion or shedding of active materials,
where the sediment comes into contact with the bottom of the
plates, leading to a short-circuit.
1.3 Possible Remedy: First, check for any conducting materials that may have entered
the cells. If present, remove these conductors. Next, remove the
plate group to check if lead bulbs have expanded and caused a
short-circuit. If so, remove the lead bulbs and replace the
electrolyte. In case the separator is damaged, separate the plate
group, identify the damaged separator, and replace it with a new
one.
2. The Reversible Vitriolic Salt of the Plates
2.1 Features: The discharge capacity is reduced, and the specific gravity is
lower than normal; during charging, both the initial and final
voltages are higher than normal; gassing occurs too early, and the
temperature of the electrolyte rises quickly, easily exceeding 55℃;
during discharge, the voltage drops too fast and reaches the final
voltage prematurely.
2.2 Reasons for Troubleshooting: This issue often arises when the cells are frequently weakly
charged, not equalizing charged in a timely manner, often
over-discharged, or subjected to small-current discharging. It can
also occur when the cells are in a state of half-discharging or
discharging for a long time, or when the electrolyte level is too
low. These factors prevent the vitriolic lead in the positive and
negative plates from transforming into active materials
effectively.
2.3 Ways to Solve the Problem: For cells with plates affected by vitriolic salt, if the
condition is not serious, proper over-charging can be used to
reverse the issue. For more serious cases, charging with a small
current is recommended. In the most severe instances, treatment
using a hydropath can be employed. To prevent this problem from
occurring, it is crucial to operate the battery according to the
service manual and perform equalizing charge in a timely manner.
