Trisodium phosphate is a versatile chemical in metal treatment, mainly acting through its basicity, complexation, and surface activity.

The mechanism of trisodium phosphate in rust removal and passivation: Trisodium phosphate can react with metal oxides (such as Fe₂O₃) to form iron phosphate complex, which partially dissolves the rust layer. At high temperature or high concentration, it can form insoluble phosphate film (such as iron phosphate) with metal surface, providing short-term rust prevention ability.

Application scenarios:
Low corrosive rust remober (to be combined with other acids such as citric acid).
Passivate the surface of carbon steel, delay the return rust (with corrosion inhibitor).
