Carbonless papers are bond-stock sheets treated with microencapsulated dye plus reactive resins and clays. They come in four main types—Coated Back (CB), Coated Front and Back (CFB), Coated Front (CF), and Self‑Contained (SC)—each serving a specific role in multi‑part forms.
CB – Coated Back
Beginning as ordinary bond paper, CB sheets have tiny dye capsules
on their reverse surface. When pressure (like writing) breaks these
capsules, the released dye transfers to clay‑and‑resin coatings on
a CF sheet below, creating a duplicate of the original mark.
CFB – Coated Front and Back
Also based on bond paper, CFB stock features a clay‑resin layer up
front and microencapsulated dye on the back. In sets exceeding two
sheets, these middle pages both receive impressions from the CB
above and pass copies down to the CF beneath.
CF – Coated Front
CF paper is bond stock with only a clay‑and‑resin coating on its
face. It reacts to dye from a CB or CFB sheet above, producing the
last copy in a multipart assembly.

| CB/CFB/CF |
Carbonless paper is coated with two different types of chemicals: CF or also known as front coating, and CB or back coating. The chemicals are held in tiny capsules that are released when the capsules rupture due to pressure from a pen or printer.
When CF and CB chemicals interact, the CF chemicals darken, causing the image to appear on the CF side of the paper. One obvious way to tell the difference between CF and CB chemicals is that the image only appears on the front side of the paper, so there is no image on the back of any paper. Because this paper produces images without copying, it is called "carbonless paper."
