Introduction
Niobium is a soft, ductile transition metal whose oxide, niobium pentoxide (Nb₂O₅), forms a protective layer similar to aluminium oxide and zinc oxide, preventing corrosion of the underlying metal.
When added to stainless steel, niobium enhances high-temperature performance by reducing overheating sensitivity and temper brittleness while improving strength, toughness, and creep resistance.
Niobium plates feature a small thermal neutron absorption cross-section, excellent corrosion resistance, and high strength at elevated temperatures. They are ideal for use in nuclear reactor structures, nuclear fuel cladding, and as alloying additives in nuclear materials.
Niobium also exhibits a high superconducting transition temperature. Niobium compounds and alloys are therefore widely used in the production of superconducting materials.
