Silicon carbide Refractory kiln furniture used for tunnel kiln
1. Description
Kiln furniture is equipment which is used inside a kiln to support the ceramics and to create more space for firing. When a kiln is delivered, the space inside is entirely empty. It is up to the ceramicist to organize kiln furniture inside for each firing to accommodate pieces of various shapes and sizes. Most kiln manufacturers ship their products with a basic furniture kits, and are usually happy to add additional components by request. Extra furniture can also be ordered or purchased independently.
Not all kiln furniture is created equal. The companies which make it give it a cone rating, indicating the temperatures it can be safely used in, and the safety can be dictated by composition, thickness, and even shape. It's important to use the right kiln furniture, as problems with the furniture could ruin a whole firing. As many people have learned to their chagrin, a single error can be highly destructive, as seen when something explodes in the kiln and damages neighboring pieces.
Conventional, our pressed silicon carbide shelves are the traditional shelves used by potters firing to cones 9-12 in natural gas, propane, wood and multi-fuel kilns. Our traditional silicon carbide shelves are oxide bonded and over the last 40 years have proven to be a sound investment providing years of service life in demanding firing applications including gas reduction, wood, soda and salt.
Sintered-alpha silicon carbide (SSiC) components are manufactured by pressureless-sintering a shape produced by slip casting, extruding, or pressing submicron alpha-silicon carbide powder. SSiC has the highest MOR, best oxidation resistance and highest use temperature (1750°C) of the four materials under discussion. SSiC is also the most expensive of the four materials and is generally economically viable only as an alternative to ReSiC at temperatures above the 1450°C use limit of NSiC.

Gas-Fired Kilns: Silicon carbide kiln furniture are most widely used in gas fired oxidation and reduction kilns. The use of Silicon carbide kiln furniture has been proven to increase productivity and save money in hobby, production studio and industrial applications.
Soda Firing: Silicon carbide kiln furnitures are a smart choice for soda firing where soda is introduced indirectly (not by direct spraying onto shelves). The extremely low porosity of the shelves allows for soda drips to be easily removed by scraping without the time consuming grinding typically associated with conventional cordierite or silicon carbide shelves.
Wood Firing: Silicon carbide kiln furnitures have been used successfully in second and third chambers of wood-fired kilns. A combination of Silicon carbide kiln furnitures and conventional silicon carbide shelves is often a sound kiln furniture system in areas where direct flame impingement and temperature uniformity is a problem.
