1. The tubes comprise an outer double skin of glass & an inner copper heat pipe. The glass is a Borosilicate compound with an absorptive coating - this absorbs the heat & transfers it to the Copper heat pipe. The glass has a vacuum between the double skins giving even greater efficiency. (Aelor solar) 2. The tubes are very strong, but if they become damaged they are easy & cheap to replace. The whole unit can still function with a damaged tube, since no fluid tranfer takes place between the tube & the heat conducting header unit. (Aelor solar) 3.
